Javier Artaza Fano was born in Bilbao
He studied piano with Carlos Ibarra; Harmony with Rafael Castro, concluding in the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid studying composition with Anton Garcia Abril and Román Alis; Electroacoustic Music with Zulema de la Cruz; Musicology with Antonio Gallego, Ismael Fernandez Cuesta, Jose Sierra and Emilio King, and orchestral conducting with Enrique García Asensio. In parallel, studies extended harmony, counterpoint and composition with Francis Escudero.
Grant from the "Royal School of Music" with the collaboration of the "Caixa de Catalunya Foundation" has been a student of Leonardo Balada and has attended numerous courses given by Luis Rego, Ramon Coll, Emanuel Ferrer, Leo Brouwer, Luis de Pablo, Cristobal Halffter, Luis Naon, etc.
During the 1986-87 season as a pianist was part of the Orchestra and Chamber Choir Bilbao, having been part of various chamber groups, from duos with instruments like the tuba or cello, even more numerous groups. A founding member of Slendro Contemporary Music Group, and has even made inroads in jazz, forming part of Booling Quartet, with whom he has performed, among others, in the Cartagena Jazz Festival.
During 1987-1988 he was Professor of Harmony at the Conservatory of the Choral Society of Bilbao.
As a composer, his catalog is extensive (currently 82 compositions), ranging from works only large orchestral instrument, with over 45 works released in all kinds of groups. His work The outline of the angel, commissioned by the Symphony Orchestra of the Region of Murcia closed Salzillo Year commemorating the fourth centenary of the death of Francisco housed.
On the electroacoustic, was, from its inception, the Laboratory of Electroacoustic Music at the Conservatory of Music in Madrid, led by Zulema de la Cruz. He was awarded the LIEM, dependent Dissemination Center for Contemporary Music, for a course taught by Horacio Electroacoustic Music Vaggione at the Centro Reina Sofia in Madrid.

In his teaching emphasizes the teaching of numerous courses of Analysis and Harmony in Segovia, Gijón (Asturias), Murcia, Madrid, Valencia, Bilbao, Sevilla, Santander, Almeria, etc. as well as many preparatory courses for the Oppositions of M. E. C. in the specialties of Harmony and Composition Fundamentals. He has also taught at the University of Ocean University of Murcia and works as a guest lecturer in music courses Adult Aula of the University of Murcia
He has written two books: "Evolution Harmonica and compositional procedures", and in cooperation with Luis Angel Benito Analysis Professor at the Conservatory of Madrid, "Methodological application of musical analysis." He has also posted a "Full Agenda's Specialty Composition Basics" in 3 volumes. He has also written articles for magazines and universities and has written program notes for the concerts of the Symphony Orchestra of Murcia, Weeks of Music CAM Youth Orchestra Festival in Murcia, etc.. He has done reviews in newspapers collaborating with the newspaper La Verdad de Murcia, round tables, etc..
He has PhD courses at the Higher School of Music Research at the Autonomous University of Madrid and is DEA by the university for research on analytical aspects of the work of Leonardo Balada.
It was late promoter of Contemporary Music Festival Molina de Segura, "Molina Current" and is a founding member and current president of CIMMA (Association of Composers and Music Researchers Murcia). He has worked as a technical advisor in the Ministry of Education of the Region of Murcia. Harmony has taught at the Conservatory of the Choral Society of Bilbao and at the Conservatory of Segovia and Gijon. He currently teaches opposition Harmony by MEC and plays his teaching as Professor of Composition and Analysis in the Conservatory of Music of Murcia.
