In Greek mythology, Kalonice signifies "the triumph of beauty". The type of beauty represented by this Hellenic goddess is related to serenity, harmony of the spirit and, in some ways, introspection. When I began working on Kalonice, for woodwind quintet, my intention was to adapt this concept of golden beauty through the timbre equilibrium between the instruments, the proportion of form (which follows a symmetrical structure), and the framework of the melodic lines which create a predominantly contrapuntal texture. In spite of the clearly melodic character of the language used, the harmonies that arise are very varied, contributing the warm, sensual character of the Mediterranean musical universe, in which we can recognize traces from the Middle East. Kalonice is a work that requires a good interaction between the instrumentalists. It demands great rhythmic precision, timbric equilibrium and a particular expressive capacity in order to bring out the character of the themes and the subtleties and shades of the different melodic lines.
