Essències (Essences) is a work for mixed choir and piano, written during the autumn of 2006, commissioned by Fernando Marina for the Càrmina Choir of Barcelona.  Fernando Marina, conductor of the Càrmina Choir, suggested to me the idea of setting music to a poem by an author of the Balearic Islands.

I mentioned this idea to my friend Jaume Caldentey who was very enthusiastic, and within few days he brought me the following poem. The poem is so immensely musical that the melodies arose practically from its intonation. This intimate space for the evocation of nature is presented to us under different perspectives, both very suggestive and charming.

While carefully following the structure and character of the text, I took the first two verses as a kind of chorus that appears at different moments. The music of this first theme takes us to a world of melancholy.

The second verse presents the second main theme, which is clear and tender. The undulating lines of the piano are complemented by a lyrical melody in the choir with predominance of the female voices.
Before introducing new sonorities, the tune and the melody of the second theme are briefly presented again.

The central section, divided into two parts, starts a cappella. The texture of the music is relaxed and transparent with a soprano soloist. After a brief interlude by the piano, the music becomes more dramatic. The male voices start an obstinato that gradually builds up with the rest of the choir, bringing the music to a very agitated climax.

The work concludes with the initial themes presented in the reverse order, evoking the same sense of serenity as the beginning.
