Complete set -  The Elegy was written while the composer was a fellow at the MacDowell Colony. It was written in memory of Mr. Niblock's former student at Michigan State University. This young violinist, Al Desiderio, along with all of the touring members of the US Navy Orchestra / Band were tragically killed in a plane crash over the Bay at Rio de Janeiro.(1960)
Because Al  Desiderio was a native of Philadelphia, it was fitting that the ELEGY was first performed by the AMERITA  ensemble,  directed by his former violin teacher (Mr. Frank Costanzo) and consisting of members of the Philadelphia orchestra.

ELEGY has been performed many times both as a concert piece as well as for memorial services.
