The story brings us to the past of humanity and to how our ancestors behaved and acted.

La Marqueseta (1813), tries to set music to a small part of the history of a Valencian village (Carcaixent), and to that of a woman who wanted to give her life in defense of her neighbours’.  In the early hours of the 13th June 1813 the quiet of the morning was interrupted by some distant and dissonant cornet calls. The intermittent calls gave way to tense calm, but again in the distance the cornet calls foreshadowed a tragic outcome.

Carcaixent people rang the church bells; then and chaos and panic seized the people. The ringing of the bells faced the deafening noise of the cannon.

In a first move, the French troops were terribly decimated, but when the bulk of their army arrived, they were so furious about the Carcaixent people’s bravery that they advanced steadily toward the final siege.

French General Harispe, thirsty for revenge, entered the town square and ordered to put the inhabitants to the sword and ransack the village. It was then that Dª Antonia Talens Mezquita, appeared before the French General to ask clemency for Carcaixent people. After the appeals, the capital punishment was commuted to an hour of ransacking.

Dª Antonia, grateful, offers the General her stately mansion, “El Palau de la Marquesa”. This woman’s heroism and dedication made her become a “Liberator” for Carcagente citizens, and was recognized with the name of “La Marqueseta”.

External elements:  for the bells ringing and the cannons, it would be advisable to use a recording of these elements. In case this recording is not available, tubular bells will be used for the ringing and the bass drum for the cannon effects.
