Description
This is his second “Concerto” for clarinet, dedicated to Roberto Pérez Moreno, clarinetist of the Córdoba Orchestra. The first concerto was written for the renowned clarinetist Enrique Pérez Piquer.
This work is based on the evolution of the clarinet, drawing a parallel with the evolution of the human being. It begins with a melody that could well belong to the medieval or Renaissance period, set in the clarinet’s low register -the chalumeau-, which was the clarinet’s predecessor. It then moves into a Baroque style through the piccolo clarinet in its high register, reminiscent of the style of J.S. Bach. This is followed by the use of the E-flat clarinet in the 19th and 20th centuries, bringing the first movement to a close with blues-inspired notes. The second movement features the B-flat clarinet and explores a more mystical world. The third movement begins with a variation of the main theme from the first movement and introduces the Bass Clarinet, an instrument that became firmly established in the orchestra at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, and which plays a highly significant role in contemporary music.
