The piece is often known as Schubert’s Ave Maria, but it was originally composed as a Lied (“song”) that Schubert wrote, based on Walter Scott’s epic poem “The Lady of the Lake.” , in a German translation by Adam Storck, and therefore forms part of Schubert’s Liederzyklus vom Fräulein vom See (“Cycle of Lieder, or songs, of the lady of the lake”).
