Joan J. Borràs Grau

Holds a PhD in Musicology from the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Valladolid, and is also a clarinet professor at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid.
As a performer, he has won prizes at the Concours International de Pontarlier (France) and at the Conservatoire de Paris, in the ´Pierre Lantier´ competition; he has performed regularly throughout Spain, as well as in France and Great Britain, at prestigious festivals such as the BMIC, Nice or Cheltenham. He has also performed in Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Belgium. With the B3 Classic Trio (clarinet, cello and piano) he has made numerous recordings for TVE, RNE, the London Film Institute, the Nice International Festival, Tele5 and CDs for the labels Warner Music, Aus-Arts, Arlu and Non ProfitMusic.
He studied music at the Conservatorio Superior de Música in Valencia and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He has received teachings from Jose Vte. Herrera, Carles Riera, Andrew Marriner, Eric Hoeprich and Pascal Moragués. He has also completed a degree in Music Sciences and History from the University of La Rioja and a master’s degree in Musical Creation and Interpretation from the Rey Juan Carlos University. He studied early music and historical clarinet at the Escuela Superior de Música de Cataluña. His doctoral thesis deals with the methodology of analysis applied to interpretation, in the repertoire for chalumeau by Christoph Graupner.
He studied conducting with Liberto Benet, José M. Cervera Collado and Jesús Amigo. He has been director of the music bands of L’Olleria SEM, Benigánim and Segorbe (all in the Valencian Community). He has directed the Choir and Chamber Orchestra of the Spanish Railways Foundation since 2016. He has published numerous articles on clarinet pedagogy and other musicological aspects related to the pedagogy of musical performance; he has also produced several educational publications related to the clarinet. He frequently gives lectures on aspects of clarinet history, wind harmonies, etc. at music conservatories and other institutions (Instrumenta, IGEB, + Q Intérpretes, among others).
He has carried out tutorial work for the preparation of final degree projects at the RCSMM for wind students of all specialties, having formed part of the qualifying committees on numerous occasions. He has also taken accreditation courses as a doctoral thesis tutor, organized by the RCSMM and the UCM.
He is currently a professor of clarinet (requinto clarinet, orchestral repertoire and chamber music for winds) at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid.
